About Low Tide at Les Petites-Dalles
Claude Monet’s Low Tide at Les Petites-Dalles (1884) gives a towering Normandy cliff a glow of rose, orange and gold. Its sunlit face rises against a blue-violet sky, while bands of reflected color shimmer across the shallow water below. Small figures along the shore are easily overlooked beside the great mass of rock. Monet makes the cliff feel both imposing and changeable, its solid surface transformed by sunlight. The original belongs to the Hasso Plattner Collection at Museum Barberini in Potsdam.
