Description
Madame Abdala appears in a darkly worked bust turning toward the right, a bare arm and loose gown set against vertical curtain lines. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec gives the named café-concert figure a concentrated presence through the relationship between body and backdrop. The close view keeps attention on the performer herself, allowing the surrounding marks to frame rather than overwhelm the portrayal.
Printed in black on laid Japan paper in 1893, the lithograph combines brush, spatter and scraping. The varying marks give the figure and the curtain different densities, holding the performer close while leaving the setting economical. The exposed arm contrasts with the darker bust, making small differences of light and texture important within the compact framing of the image.
