Description
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec places Mademoiselle Lender and Baron within a faintly stated theatrical encounter. The two figures occupy the open scene, with orange-toned accents around the upper right lending a warmer point of attention. The lighter marks keep the arrangement from becoming a densely described interior, concentrating on the paired presence named by the title.
Dated 1893, the crayon, brush and spatter lithograph was printed in sanguine on wove paper. Its drawing-like appearance belongs to the printed image rather than making the object a separate pencil sketch. Toulouse-Lautrec connects the performers through a restrained graphic surface, allowing a particular encounter to retain its own identity. The print offers a quieter view of stage company, where delicate marks and limited color can preserve the interest of two people sharing one scene.
