Description

Mill Near the Grand Chartreuse places a small building at the left above a stream in a narrow wooded ravine. Rocks and trees give the building a close setting, while a foreground cascade carries the eye through the lower space. Turner places practical architecture within terrain that remains vigorous around it, making the relation between the mill and flowing water central to the landscape.

Published on January 1, 1816, the print combines etching and mezzotint. Turner designed and published the composition, but Henry Edward Dawe is credited with both etching and engraving it; this is the first of four states. The distinction matters because the printed surface is not simply an autograph etching by Turner. The work joins an artist’s landscape design with another printmaker’s execution, making its building and surroundings part of a carefully translated graphic image.
