Description
May Belfort appears in a pale full-length gown, small dark hands standing out within an otherwise lightly marked arrangement of windows and curtain. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec gives the performer an unusually restrained graphic presence. The broad pale surface asks for close looking, allowing the named figure and a few surrounding accents to carry the portrayal without a densely described stage.
The 1895 lithograph uses crayon and spatter printed in black on wove paper. Its lightness makes the contrast of gown and small dark accents especially important. Rather than building a forceful silhouette against a crowded background, Toulouse-Lautrec lets the performer emerge gradually from the paper, giving the portrait a quiet scale that rewards attention to the few marks holding it together.
