Description
Moonlight turns a farmyard into an arrangement of dark buildings, open ground, and luminous sky. Roofs contain the view on either side, while a cart and its wheel occupy the foreground and a gate draws attention deeper into the yard. Above these familiar structures, the moon and drifting clouds give the setting a different scale and a quieter rhythm.
The woodcut follows a design by Jean-François Millet, translating the nocturnal scene into contrasting passages of light and dark. Details of the working yard remain present, but the surrounding shadows soften their practical purpose. The image finds atmosphere in a place normally defined by activity, allowing the shapes of roofs, tools, and enclosure to become still forms beneath the changeable night sky.
