Description

Mount Sainte-Victoire rises in pale blue and white beyond rusty earth and dark pines in Paul Cézanne’s painting. A tree at the left sends branches across the upper view, connecting the nearby forms to the distant slope. The landscape feels built from distinct touches of color, allowing the mountain’s recognizable silhouette to share attention with the whole arrangement around it.

Painted around 1904 in oil on fabric, the view was made from a roadside position near Aix-en-Provence. The branch echoes the mountain’s slope, making near and far respond to one another within the composition. Cézanne’s separate touches of color allow earth, trees and sky to remain distinct while sharing a constructed rhythm. The work’s interest lies in that balance, where the impression of a particular place is held together through relationships among color, direction and shape.
