Description
Napoleon rides a white horse between two mounted companions, one in blue at the left and another in red at the right. His dark hat and gray coat concentrate the central figure within the colored grouping. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec gives the historical subject a particular equestrian arrangement, letting the riders’ shared movement carry the composition without identifying a campaign from the image alone.
The 1895 lithograph combines crayon, brush and spatter in six colors on wove paper. The bright central horse contrasts with the darker hat and the colored companions, giving the group a strong hierarchy. Toulouse-Lautrec approaches the historical subject through a compact arrangement of riders, using color and relative position to make Napoleon distinct within the shared equestrian scene.
