Description
Nevada Falls, Yosemite places the waterfall near the upper center of a steep, wooded landscape. Bright water drops between the dark banks and continues as a foaming rush toward the lower left, carrying the eye down through the picture. Tall pines, exposed rock and fallen logs frame its course, making the white movement of the water stand out against the heavy textures around it.
Albert Bierstadt painted this oil landscape in 1872 or 1873. Its vertical arrangement emphasizes the descent of the falls rather than a distant panoramic overlook. The scene develops through contrasts of scale and material: slender trunks rise beside massive rock, while the water cuts a changing path through both. Those relationships give the landscape its energy without diminishing the substantial, enclosing presence of the forest.
