Description
Nursery on Schenkweg by Vincent van Gogh opens with a water-filled ditch reflecting parts of the scene above it. Slender trees rise through the middle and right, while buildings flank the more open ground beyond. The wide format lets these different elements extend across the sheet, giving a modest working landscape a structure built from lines, reflections and intervals.
Created in April–May 1882, the sheet combines chalk and graphite with pen, brush and ink, adding touches of white to the paper. Those different materials allow van Gogh to establish both lines and areas of tone rather than depend on a single kind of mark. The drawing offers an encounter with looking built from many small decisions. Its appeal lies in how the visual character of a particular place emerges through the artist’s changing pressure, emphasis and handling.
