Description
Old Beggar Woman with a Gourd is an etching by Rembrandt van Rijn dating to about 1629. The standing figure is shown in a narrow vertical composition, her bent posture, layered clothing, and gourd described with economical etched lines.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art identifies this impression as the second state of two. Rembrandt’s compact treatment emphasizes the woman’s silhouette and physical presence while leaving much of the surrounding paper open.
