Description
Old Man with a Divided Fur Cap presents a forward-facing figure beneath distinctive headwear in Rembrandt’s etched portrait. His beard and the unusual, bifurcated shape of the headwear give the bust a distinct outline, while the relatively pale treatment keeps the face accessible to close looking. The cap is more than a label in the title: its separate masses contribute directly to the character of the image.
Made in 1640, the work uses etching with some drypoint and is represented in the first of two states. Rembrandt makes the contrast between an aged face and textured clothing sufficient for an expressive portrait without supplying a named sitter. The small image invites attention to the different kinds of line that establish skin, beard and fur. Its interest remains with the individual face and the varied textures surrounding it.
