Description
Pablo Picasso’s The Frugal Repast shows a thin man and woman seated at a table with a bottle, glass, and a small amount of food. His arm rests around her shoulders, while she supports her chin on one hand. Fine lines and dark hatching describe their angular faces, long hands, and worn clothing.
The print makes a sparse meal the setting for a close human relationship. Empty table space and the contrast between the figures’ poses suggest both need and companionship. Picasso’s line gives the bodies a fragile physical presence, drawing attention to their gestures without filling the scene with unnecessary detail.
