Description
Pablo Picasso’s Portrait of Wilhelm Uhde lets a man’s face and upper body emerge from a dense field of gray and brown facets. The eyes, nose, collar, and jacket provide clues within intersecting lines and planes. Differences in tone replace the usual separation between sitter and background.
The portrait uses a restrained palette to focus attention on structure. Small angular passages build the head gradually, inviting the viewer to move between recognizable details and the overall pattern. Picasso’s treatment gives the sitter an absorbed presence while making the process of seeing the image part of its subject.
