Description

Peasants Going to Work shows two people walking toward the left, a woman carrying a bundle or basket and a man bearing a fork across his shoulder. Millet gives the journey its meaning through those practical loads, connecting the figures with the working day ahead. Their shared direction makes the passage a human relationship as well as an ordinary movement through space.

Dated 1863, the etching is printed in brown ink on laid paper and represents the seventh of seven states. Its graphic identity remains distinct from paintings or drawings of a similar subject. Millet brings the passage into a concentrated scene, where the approach to work can carry interest through the relationship of people and their setting. The print preserves an ordinary interval in the day, giving the journey as much attention as the labor that follows it.
