Description
Pembury Mill opens around a bright central doorway where workers are visible within a dark interior. The waterwheel at the left and surrounding equipment give the setting its practical identity, while illumination directs attention toward the human activity. Turner makes a working building pictorially lively through the relation between its dense shadow and the small area of light.
Published on June 10, 1808, Pembury Mill combines etching and mezzotint. J. M. W. Turner designed and etched the scene, with Charles Turner engraving and publishing it; this is the second of four states. The image’s appeal comes from its particular balance of light, labor and ordinary surroundings, where a modest mill becomes a complete landscape.
