Description
Peter and John stand near a kneeling man low at the left and center of Rembrandt’s Temple-gate scene. A large column rises beside them, while a broad arch opens toward a distant crowd at the right. The healing episode gains intimacy within an expansive setting, making a particular response to human need the center of the scene’s sacred narrative.
Made in 1659, the print combines etching, engraving and drypoint. Rembrandt gives the episode a worked material presence that can be considered beyond the words supplying its identity. The subject’s interest rests in the connection between those acting and the person receiving their attention, making healing a shared encounter rather than a detached emblem. A familiar biblical story acquires intimacy through that relationship, allowing bodies and place to carry a meaning extending beyond the immediate moment.
