The Triumph of Death

A few leafless trees stud hills otherwise bare of vegetation; fish lie rotting on the shores of a corpse-choked pond. Art historian James Snyder emphasizes the "scorched, barren earth, devoid of any life as far as the eye can see." In this setting, legions of skeletons advance on the living, who either flee in terror or try in vain to fight back. In the foreground, skeletons haul a wagon full of skulls; in the upper left corner, others ring the bell that signifies the death knell of the world. People are herded into a coffin-shaped trap decorated with crosses, while a skeleton on horseback kills people with a scythe. This is one of four horses ridden by skeletons that are depicted in the painting, perhaps alluding to the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. The painting depicts people of different social backgrounds – from peasants and soldiers to nobles as well as a king and a cardinal – being taken by death indiscriminately.

Hunters in the Snow

Hunters in the Snow by Pieter Bruegel the Elder opens from a snowy hillside onto a village and a broad frozen valley. Three hunters descend at the left with a pack of dogs, their dark forms set against the pale ground. Bare tree trunks rise close to the viewer, while rooftops, ponds and distant mountains carry the eye into the landscape. The returning group brings the viewer into the scene before attention spreads toward the many smaller activities below.

Painted in 1565, the work belongs to a series of six seasonal paintings commissioned by the Antwerp collector Niclaes Jongelinck. Bruegel developed the older tradition of the Labours of the Months into an expansive account of rural life and changing weather. The hunters' small catch contrasts with the bustle of the village: people tend an outdoor fire near the inn, and skaters move across the frozen ponds. Work, recreation and the demands of winter occupy the same continuous landscape.

White snow, blue-green ice and brown buildings give the scene a restrained, coherent palette. The foreground trees and sloping path lead diagonally toward the valley, while tiny figures make its breadth readable through human scale. Bruegel combines Flemish buildings with Alpine-looking peaks, creating an imagined landscape rather than a record of one identifiable place. The painting's depth comes from this balance between an immense winter setting and closely observed everyday life, inviting the viewer to move from the hunters' slow return to the lively world beyond.
