Description
Tauromaquia Plate 16 by Francisco Goya holds a remarkable feat of strength in a moment of suspense. A man braces his bare feet against the ground and presses close to the bull, while two spectators watch from a distance. The dark animal curves over his body, making the struggle feel both intimate and precarious.
Created in 1816 for La Tauromaquia, the scene depicts a bull being thrown in the ring at Madrid. Goya gives the encounter an unusually spare setting: a broad field of aquatint surrounds the figures, and a sloping band of shadow anchors them below. Fine lines distinguish clothing, hide and earth, while the open space intensifies the concentration of the central pair.
