Description

In There isn’t time now, soldiers threaten women amid the aftermath of violence, bringing the danger of another assault into a scene already marked by loss. Francisco Goya’s There Isn’t Time Now gives the encounter a caption of urgency without explaining what opportunity has vanished. The figures’ proximity makes the lack of safety an immediate condition rather than a distant possibility.

Made around 1810 and published in 1863, plate 19 of The Disasters of War uses etching and tonal work to make the threatened people physically present. Goya keeps the focus on the consequences of military force in civilian life. The title’s compressed phrasing adds pressure to the scene, suggesting that events have advanced beyond the point of ordinary preparation or appeal. Its severity lies in that narrowing of possibility, where danger occupies the space in which a response might otherwise have been made.
