Description
Tauromaquia Plate 29 by Francisco Goya captures Pepe Illo making the close maneuver known as the recorte. The matador leans into the encounter, his cape falling around him as the bull lowers its head. Their opposing movements create a compact, forceful center of attention beneath the crowded arena barrier.
Made in 1816 for La Tauromaquia, the image combines a sharply observed central action with a lively supporting cast. Assistants gesture and mounted riders wait behind the pair, adding different rhythms to the scene. Goya’s dark foreground shadow and finely worked textures heighten the sense of proximity, inviting the viewer to follow the brief interval in which courage, timing and danger meet.
