Description
In Not in This Case Either, a hanged man remains suspended from a tree while a seated soldier watches nearby in Not in This Case Either. The still body and the living observer occupy the same space without the relief of an effective response. Goya makes the act of looking part of the scene’s difficulty, giving death a witness whose presence does not undo it.
The print from the Disasters of War combines etched line with aquatint and drypoint, giving bodies and setting a concentrated tonal presence. Its force comes from the relationship between exposure and observation, where one person remains available to view but no longer able to answer it. The spare title connects the encounter to the series’ further acts of violence, refusing to make this death an isolated exception.
