Description
They Escape Through the Flames shows figures moving through fire in a scene where movement and danger remain inseparable. The title places them between a threatened setting and the uncertain possibility of leaving it. Escape does not become an easy resolution; the fire makes the way out urgent and precarious, keeping attempted survival at the center of the encounter.
Goya’s etching uses worked lines to give the event a concentrated presence, keeping the encounter within the scale of individual bodies rather than a distant panorama. The scene is compelling because it treats survival as an action under pressure, where the way out may still pass through danger. Its title holds that contradiction in a few words, allowing the image to remain both a record of destruction and an account of human effort.
