Description

In Cruel Tale of Woe, Francisco Goya sets a surviving family among bodies on desolate ground. A standing man extends a hat in appeal, while a woman sits nearby with a child. The exposed dead leave little room to separate the family’s present need from a possible fate. Their small acts of endurance become the only movement within the scene’s terrible stillness.

Plate 48 of The Disasters of War opens the series’ sustained examination of famine. Goya gives hunger an immediate human shape through worn faces, vulnerable children and the gesture of asking for help. The broadly worked sky offers no comforting horizon, and the uncluttered setting keeps the family’s condition inescapable. The image records a consequence of war that continues beyond combat, when surviving an attack does not ensure the means to live.
