Description

In What a Tailor Can Do!, Francisco Goya gathers worshippers before what appears to be an imposing robed figure. Closer attention reveals a tree dressed in clothing, its branches giving the empty costume an almost commanding gesture. A kneeling woman, frightened child and surrounding spectators respond to the disguise as though it possessed real power. The pale apparition rises against a darker, unsettled landscape.

Published as plate 52 of Los Caprichos in 1799, the print turns an improvised costume into a satire of superstition and misplaced reverence. Goya makes the deception visible without dissolving its unsettling effect: the viewer can recognize the trick and still understand its hold on the crowd. The title’s reference to tailoring points toward the gap between outward appearance and substance, a recurring concern throughout the series.
