Description

In There it goes, a rider mounted on a grotesque creature takes to the air, making the sensation of departure strange rather than liberating. Francisco Goya’s There It Goes belongs to the witch-haunted portion of Los Caprichos, where bodies and ordinary expectations are displaced into improbable movement. The title’s casual exclamation contrasts with the unsettling character of the event.

Published in 1799 as plate 66, the etching and aquatint give the airborne encounter a dark, unstable atmosphere. Goya makes the impossible feel physically present through the weight and direction of the figures. The image does not require a single allegorical explanation to convey its unease. Its fascination comes from that collision between an everyday phrase and an extraordinary sight, allowing humor, fear and a sense of uncontrolled motion to occupy the same scene.
