Description
Tauromaquia Plate 9 by Francisco Goya brings a dramatic encounter into focus. An armored knight confronts a fallen bull while his horse lies behind them, the three forms isolated against a dark, open background. The knight’s wide stance and the bull’s lowered body create a tense triangular grouping. Carefully drawn armor, pale flanks and deep shadow give each figure weight, while the empty space makes the encounter feel stark and personal.
Francisco Goya dated this work 1816 as part of La Tauromaquia. The subject follows a Spanish knight who fights the bull after losing his horse. Etching and burnished aquatint bring sharp detail into broad tonal fields, giving the scene a restrained intensity that rewards close looking.
