Description
In Nor Do These Either, violence is inflicted on women by figures whose close physical presence leaves little room for escape. Francisco Goya’s Nor These Either continues the bleak sequence of The Disasters of War with a title that refuses an exception. The threatened bodies make the scene particular, while the words suggest that their suffering belongs to a repeated pattern.
Made in 1810 and published in 1863, plate 10 uses etching and burin to keep the encounter severe and direct. Goya does not soften the event through a distant view of military spectacle. The image’s force lies in the loss of protection experienced by people caught outside the roles of organized combat. Its brief caption extends that vulnerability from one scene to another, making repetition itself part of the indictment rather than a reason to become accustomed to what is shown.
