Description
Le Chariot de Terre Cuite pairs theatrical lettering with an unexpected blue image: an elephant supports a decorative platform, with a gesturing figure above. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec turns the tall playbill into a lively encounter between text, ornament and performance.
Made in 1895, this lithograph advertised Victor Barrucand’s adaptation of a Sanskrit love story at the Théâtre de l’Oeuvre in Paris. The figure above the elephant represents Félix Fénéon, who delivered the prologue. Toulouse-Lautrec’s spare blue marks give the design a light, animated presence while leaving the typography integral to the composition.
