Description
Vincent van Gogh’s Poplars near Nuenen follows a rural road beneath rows of slender trees. Their autumn foliage forms a fine golden canopy above dark trunks, with small figures and distant buildings adding signs of daily life. The ground is worked in earthy strokes, and a cooler strip of sky opens beyond the trees.
The scene belongs to Van Gogh’s Dutch period, when rural subjects and subdued colors occupied much of his attention. Repeated trunks lead the eye into the distance, while variations in their spacing keep the avenue from becoming rigid. The painting finds its quiet atmosphere in the meeting of changing foliage, weathered ground, and ordinary movement.
