Description

Paul Gauguin’s Portrait of Stéphane Mallarmé brings the poet’s face forward from a densely worked background. His mustache and beard frame the mouth, while small etched marks give the surrounding darkness a restless texture. Made in 1891, the print has the intimacy of a close encounter rather than the distance of a formal monument. The sitter’s slightly turned head keeps the image from becoming a rigid frontal likeness.

The contrast between the pale face and active ground gives the portrait its quiet intensity. Gauguin uses the etched line both to describe individual features and to complicate the space around them, so recognition and atmosphere develop together. The viewer is drawn first toward the eyes and expression, then outward into the shifting marks. A writer known through language is approached here through the concentrated visual presence of his head.
