Description
Jean-Léon Gérôme’s Prayer in a Mosque opens into a long interior of columns, striped arches, and hanging lamps. Worshippers stand or kneel on patterned rugs, while birds occupy parts of the floor. The repeated architecture leads toward a softly illuminated distance.
The scene balances the stillness of prayer with the rhythm of the building. Small figures emphasize the hall’s depth and scale, and warm stone contrasts with cooler shadow. Gérôme gives the interior a detailed, orderly character through carefully separated surfaces and forms.
