Description
Rest on the Flight into Egypt, a drawing from the school of Rembrandt, shows a family beneath an arching natural shelter at the left, with a donkey seen from behind at the far right. Sparse brown-ink outlines give the company a pale, intimate presence. The pause during the flight into Egypt becomes an encounter with ordinary needs within a sacred journey, allowing rest to carry its own human significance.
Drawn in pen and brown ink, the seventeenth-century sheet was formerly attributed to Ferdinand Bol and is now placed within Rembrandt’s school. Framing lines give the image a defined field for attentive looking. The scene’s interest lies in the human scale of its subject, where an ordinary pause can become a particular moment within a larger remembered narrative.
