Description
Road in Etten by Vincent van Gogh follows a street lined with pollard willows, where a man sweeps with a broom. The repeating tree forms and the receding road give rhythm to a scene rooted in ordinary rural work.
Created in 1881, during Van Gogh’s stay in Etten, the drawing combines chalk, pencil, pastel and watercolor over a pen-and-ink underdrawing. Its attention to a humble daily task gives the landscape a human focus as well as a strong sense of place.
