Description
Rose Mallow shows a bright pink blossom and smaller buds rising among rounded green leaves in Katsukawa Shunshō’s floral painting. The cluster occupies the lower part of a spacious neutral silk field, allowing stems and leaves to stand clearly against the surrounding ground. The image gives the plant a particular presence through the balance of delicate color and open space.
The eighteenth-century hanging scroll is painted in ink and color on silk. Its floral subject belongs alongside Shunshō’s better-known figure work, showing a different scale of attention within his art. The open ground makes the concentrated growth feel especially distinct, inviting the viewer to follow the relationship between blossom, buds and leaves as the plant becomes the quiet center of the composition.
