Description
Saint Christopher Facing Left by Albrecht Dürer concentrates on the weight and movement of a journey through water. The bearded saint carries the Christ Child on his shoulders and braces himself with a long staff. His heavy cloak gathers into broad folds, while the child’s small figure and radiant halo provide a delicate contrast above him.
Engraved in 1521, this compact image brings the figures close to the viewer, leaving only a narrow setting of water, reeds and distant landscape. Dürer’s careful hatching gives the saint’s body and clothing a sense of physical effort. The relationship between the powerful bearer and the small child becomes the heart of a scene that combines protection, endurance and quiet devotion.
