Description
Saint Jerome kneels near the lower center of a shadowed study, a window at the left providing a contrasting opening. Attributed to the school of Rembrandt, the drawing gives prayer an enclosed, intimate setting. Darkly washed masses establish the room around the figure, while the kneeling posture concentrates attention on the saint’s devotional activity rather than the architecture alone.
The seventeenth-century drawing combines pen and brown ink with brown wash and touches of white and red chalk. These materials let the interior gather into broad tonal areas without losing the figure’s position. The room’s darkness and the nearby window give the scene different degrees of openness, holding Jerome within a space that makes inward attention feel physically sheltered and distinct from the world beyond.
