Description
Caravaggio’s Salome with the Head of John the Baptist presents a close group against a deep, dark background. Salome holds a platter as a man lowers the severed head onto it. An older woman leans into the scene between them.
Light picks out faces, hands, and pale fabric, leaving little room beyond the figures. Their contrasting expressions and gestures carry the drama: the task is direct, but the responses remain uneasy. Caravaggio makes the scene powerful through its compressed space and starkly illuminated human presence.
