Description
Samson Rending the Lion by Albrecht Dürer captures a struggle of extraordinary physical force. Samson braces himself on the animal’s back and pulls its jaws apart, his twisting body set against the lion’s sweeping mane and curled tail. Beyond the confrontation, trees, distant buildings and a broad landscape open the scene into a surprisingly expansive setting.
Made around 1497–98, this woodcut depicts the biblical hero’s encounter with the lion. Dürer varies the thickness and direction of the lines to distinguish fur, fabric, foliage and sky. The contrast between the violent foreground action and the ordered world behind it gives the image much of its tension, while its intricate detail rewards a slower look.
