Description
Eugène Delacroix’s vertical sheet of figure studies brings reclining and leaning bodies together in an open arrangement of pencil lines. Their forms overlap, while smaller studies occupy the lower left, giving the page several scales of attention. A body can appear through a few light marks or a more sustained outline, making the different trials visible within one loosely organized surface.
The drawing was made in graphite on laid paper, later mounted on cardboard. The museum title identifies two reclining studies and a seated figure possibly holding a lyre, preserving uncertainty about that object. Delacroix’s interest here lies in the positions and relationships of bodies rather than a fully resolved setting. The page allows the viewer to follow successive decisions, seeing how a shift of pose can become a new pictorial possibility.
