Description
Rembrandt’s Sheet with Two Studies pairs an outlined tree at the left with a large dark velvet cap and part of the artist’s head toward the lower right. The separate studies share the paper without forming a single landscape or portrait. Their difference of scale and subject gives the image an exploratory character, inviting attention to how the artist moves between outward observation and his own appearance.
Made around 1642, the etching places two studies on a single surface rather than joining them into a narrative scene. The tree and the partial self-portrait invite different kinds of observation, one directed toward landscape and the other toward a human likeness. Their coexistence lets the sheet retain the character of an artist testing forms, where incompleteness is part of the image’s interest.
