Description
A ceremony of worshipping Benten at Shinabazu Temple is the subject of Katsukawa Shunshō’s image, bringing collective religious activity into the center of the work. Small figures crowd a curved bridge and shoreline above the water within the shrine setting. Their shared presence gives the monochrome scene a communal rhythm, making the ceremony visible through the relationship between a gathering of people and the place they occupy.
The monochrome woodblock print uses ink on paper, distinguishing its visual means from Shunshō’s color prints. The absence of printed color makes the organization of line and tone especially important to the scene’s legibility. The work’s interest lies in the relationship between individual people and a public observance, where a ceremony creates a shared field of attention. Shunshō preserves that communal encounter in a form that can be considered beyond the occasion itself.
