Description
Ships in a Breeze by J. M. W. Turner shows fully rigged ships passing close to an anchored three-masted vessel while figures watch from a wooden pier. The composition brings activity on the water together with observation from the shore. The vessels’ differing positions give the marine setting a layered character, allowing the spectators’ small scale to emphasize the surrounding expanse and the larger ships moving through it.
The etching and mezzotint was issued in 1808 for Liber Studiorum. J. M. W. Turner designed and etched the image, while Charles Turner engraved and published it. The combination of outlined rigging and broader tonal atmosphere makes the sea scene readable at different distances. The print connects the particular presence of vessels with the air and water around them, holding movement within a structured maritime composition.
