Description

An older monk raises a finger toward his lips in Édouard Manet’s Silentium, with a book held before him at the left. The compact bust gives the quiet gesture an immediate presence. Face, hand and volume draw attention together, allowing the title’s call for silence to become tangible through a figure rather than an abstract inscription.

The design dates from 1862–64, while this impression belongs to a later edition. Its etched lines give the subject a distinct graphic character, concentrating attention through contour and contrast rather than painted color. The work’s interest lies in the meeting between a suggestive title and a closely considered figure, where looking can remain open and unhurried. The image allows a mood of quiet to emerge from the encounter rather than turning it into a fully described story.
