Description
Skiffs by Gustave Caillebotte brings the viewer close to a paddler moving across a shaded river. The pointed boat stretches toward the lower edge, while other skiffs recede between the wooded banks. Yellow paddles and straw hats catch the light against green water, and loose strokes turn the surface into a pattern of ripples and reflections. Painted in 1877, this is the version in the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
The unusually close foreground and sharply angled boats give the scene its sense of immediacy. A paddle enters from the right, suggesting activity continuing beyond the picture’s edge, while the more distant figures create a quieter rhythm upstream. Caillebotte balances an energetic viewpoint with the stillness of a summer river, making leisure feel both observed and vividly present.
