Description
A great spreading tree gives Soldiers at Rest a shaded foreground, while a valley, bridge and village open toward distant mountains. The soldiers’ pause appears within a setting much larger than their immediate activity. In this print after Pieter Bruegel the Elder, the broad canopy and receding view invite the eye to move between nearby human incident and the surrounding landscape.
Made around 1555–56, the work belongs to The Large Landscapes and combines etching with engraving. Johannes and Lucas van Doetecum translated Bruegel’s design into the varied marks of a printed image. That partnership allows the scene to carry both the designer’s conception and the printmakers’ handling of texture and depth. Its appeal lies in the meeting of an expansive view and a modest human incident, where a moment of stillness has room to remain small within the surrounding world.
