Description
About Spring Flowers
Claude Monet’s Spring Flowers (1864) gathers peonies, hydrangeas, lilacs and geraniums into a generous still life. Pale petals and green leaves emerge from a dark background, with flowers spilling outward and downward across the composition. The contrast makes each cluster feel bright and immediate, while lively brushwork catches light on the foliage. This early painting reveals Monet’s close attention to flowers long before the water-lily scenes of his later career. The original is in the Cleveland Museum of Art.
