Description
Standing Bather presents a nude figure turned partly away, with bent knees and the head inclined toward the left. The arms gather in front of the body, making the pose feel self-contained against a softly toned background. Auguste Renoir lets the figure’s changing outline carry the image, allowing shoulder, back and legs to form a connected movement rather than separate anatomical details.
The lithograph dates to 1896, and this displayed image has a restrained gray appearance. Tonal passages give the body and the surrounding field different weights without introducing an elaborate setting. The slightly turned pose creates both breadth and depth within the figure, while the quiet backdrop leaves attention concentrated on the balance between the body’s curved contours and the smaller changes of light across it.
