Description
Standing Male Nude Holding a Bow, also known as the Poynter Apollo, shows Albrecht Dürer exploring the poised balance of the human figure. The young man stands with his weight shifted to one leg, holding a bow in one hand and an orb in the other. Fine outlines and concentrated hatching distinguish the softly modeled torso from the more lightly indicated limbs.
Drawn around 1501–3, the study reflects Dürer’s interest in classical sculpture and ideal proportion. Its pose later informed Adam in his engraving Adam and Eve. The visible contrast between brown and black ink also gives the sheet a sense of development, allowing the viewer to follow an artist testing the relationship between outline, anatomy and form.
