Description

Standing Oriental Figure, attributed to the Circle of Rembrandt, presents a tall man in a sparse setting. His long robe or coat gives the body an extended silhouette, while darker ink along one side makes the figure stand clearly against the surrounding paper. The sparse setting allows clothing and bearing to carry the image, with little to distract from the upright presence at its center.

The Metropolitan Museum dates the sheet to the seventeenth century and identifies its medium as pen and brown ink. Its historical title, Standing Oriental Figure, is best treated as a catalog designation rather than proof of a particular nationality, profession or individual identity. The drawing belongs to Rembrandt’s artistic circle rather than being presented as his autograph work. Its interest lies in the economy with which line and darker passages establish a clothed human figure.
